Pastoralist Concern Kenya leverages Nature-Based Solutions and community-led innovation to build lasting food security, economic resilience, and environmental sustainability across Northern Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands — where climate change is hitting hardest and fastest.
Northern Kenya’s nomadic pastoralist communities have lived in balance with their arid environment for generations. Climate change is disrupting that balance — intensifying drought cycles, degrading rangelands, and threatening the livelihoods of millions across the Horn of Africa. PCK responds with integrated resilience programmes that combine deep community knowledge with innovative, evidence-based approaches, building long-term adaptive capacity from the ground up.
Our Approach: Nature-Based Solutions
PCK’s resilience work is anchored in Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) — an approach that leverages Kenya’s natural environment as an instrument for development rather than treating it as something separate from it. By restoring rangelands, protecting water sources, and supporting green initiatives, we improve both livelihoods and environmental outcomes simultaneously.
Key Interventions
Rangeland Restoration
Rehabilitation of degraded zones through strategic reseeding initiatives and the construction of livestock troughs to support sustainable herd management.
Nature-Based Solutions
Green initiatives to improve food production and increase incomes through innovative approaches that work with, not against, Kenya’s natural environment.
Greenhouse Infrastructure
Installation of greenhouse infrastructure enabling food production in arid conditions, diversifying household income and improving nutrition in Hurri Hills and Kalacha.
Community Resilience Building
Interventions that build adaptive capacities and improve livelihoods of vulnerable nomadic pastoralists in a sustainable manner, including livestock health support and veterinary supply provision.
Livelihoods & Enterprise
Mentorship and training to upskill entrepreneurs and build their capacity towards sustainable livelihoods, including sustainable use of natural resources for enhanced food security.
Environmental Management Committees
Establishing and supporting CBOs that supervise environmental and developmental issues at the community level, institutionalising local ownership of natural resource management.
Policy Contribution
Contributing to Kenya’s National ASAL Policy
Pastoralist Concern Kenya is proud to have contributed to the development of Kenya’s national ASAL (Arid and Semi-Arid Lands) Policy and Practice — bringing the lived experience and voice of pastoral communities into the national frameworks that shape resource allocation, development planning, and climate adaptation response. This positions PCK not merely as a programme implementer, but as a recognised policy actor in Kenya’s pastoral development discourse.
