Pastoralist Concern Kenya addresses the root causes of pastoral conflict through community-led peace building, reconciliation, and Alternative Dispute Resolution — building durable social cohesion across Northern Kenya’s most conflict-affected pastoral communities.
Conflicts over pasture and water are endemic to pastoral communities in Northern Kenya. Climate change is intensifying these pressures — shrinking resource availability and increasing competition between communities. PCK’s peace building programme is grounded in community ownership and applied research. We do not impose external frameworks: we facilitate local solutions, building the capacity of communities, institutions, and governments to prevent and resolve conflict sustainably.
The Context
Pastoral communities in Northern Kenya are primarily organised around access to pasture and water. When these resources become scarce — as they increasingly do due to climate change and drought — competition intensifies and conflict follows. The consequences fall hardest on the most vulnerable: women, children, and small-scale herders.
PCK is alive to the fact that these conflicts are majorly resource-based. Our approach does not seek to suppress conflict — it seeks to address the structural and environmental conditions that generate it, while building community capacity to manage disputes peacefully.
Our Approach
PCK’s peace building work is community-led and evidence-based. We work directly with the groups most affected by pastoral conflict — youth, women, and herders — equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and platforms to become active agents of peace in their own communities.
We also invest in knowledge management — documenting lessons from every peace building intervention to build an evidence base that can inform policy at county, national, and regional levels.

Civic Education & Training
Building community-level knowledge of rights, governance, and peaceful conflict resolution mechanisms among youth, women, and herder groups.
Reconciliation Initiatives
Facilitated reconciliation processes between conflicting community groups, structured to produce lasting agreements and restore trust across pastoral borders.
Alternative Dispute Resolution
ADR frameworks designed for pastoral contexts — building community-level mediation capacity that operates independently of formal legal systems.
Applied Research
Targeted research to identify root causes of conflict within specific locations — generating an evidence base that drives more effective and durable interventions.
Cross-Border Peace Forums
Convening communities from different counties to build cross-boundary relationships, shared resource agreements, and collaborative early-warning systems.
Knowledge Management
Documenting lessons learnt to institutionalise peace building practices within communities and government institutions across the Horn of Africa region.
